Everything You Need to Know Before You Sign Up
If you’ve been hearing people talk about the CrossFit Open and thinking…
- “What even is the Open?”
- “Is that only for the super fit people?”
- “Am I ready for that?”
- “What if I can’t do the workouts?”
You’re not alone.
Every year, we have dozens of members at CrossFit Harrisonburg wondering if they should sign up — especially if it’s their first time.
So this guide is for you.
What Is the CrossFit Open?
The CrossFit Open is a worldwide event where CrossFit athletes — from beginners to elite competitors — complete the same workout each week.
It typically lasts three weeks, with one workout released each week.
But here’s the important part:
At CrossFit Harrisonburg, the Open isn’t about competing against the world…
It’s about coming together as a community to test ourselves, support each other, and have a lot of fun in the process.
Think of it less like a competition and more like our gym’s championship season.
Do I Have to Be “Good” at CrossFit?
Not at all.
In fact, most Open participants are everyday members — not elite competitors.
At our gym, about 80% of participants are everyday athletes or newer members.
The Open is designed with multiple divisions:
- RX (prescribed)
- Scaled
- Foundations / Beginner options
And this year we’re introducing something new…
New This Year: The Sweat Open
For the first time ever, CrossFit Harrisonburg is offering a Sweat Open track.
This option is perfect if you:
- Are newer to CrossFit
- Feel intimidated by technical movements
- Just want a great workout in the Open environment
Expect:
- Less technical skills
- More approachable workouts
- The same Friday Night Lights experience
You still get the energy, the teams, and the fun — just in a lane built for you.
What If I Don’t Like Competing?
Great news…
You don’t have to treat it like a competition at all.
We emphasize:
- Showing up
- Trying your best
- Supporting others
- Celebrating personal wins
You’re not competing against other members.
You’re testing you vs. you.
For many people, the Open becomes the moment they realize how far they’ve come.
What If I’m Too Busy?
You can still participate.
Each workout can be done during:
- Friday Night Lights
- Scheduled heats
- Regular class times (if needed)
You don’t have to attend every event to be part of the experience.
Do what you can — it all counts.
What Are Friday Night Lights?
This is where the magic happens.
During the Open we host Friday Night Lights, where the gym transforms into an electric community event:
- Athletes in heats
- Teams cheering each other on
- Themed nights
- Music and energy
- Families and friends invited to watch
Even if you’re nervous beforehand… you’ll walk away smiling.
We’ll finish the Open with a celebration party recognizing the effort and spirit of everyone involved.
Why Should I Do the Open?
Because it gives you things regular classes can’t:
- A chance to test your progress
- A shared experience with the whole gym
- A confidence boost
- Breakthrough moments you’ll remember
You’ll see first pull-ups.
First double-unders.
First time finishing under a time cap.
And you’ll have an entire community cheering you on.
Still Nervous? That’s Normal.
Almost everyone feels that way before their first Open workout.
But year after year, the feedback is the same:
“I wish I hadn’t waited so long to do it.”
The Open has a way of bringing people closer, building confidence, and reminding you why you started.
Ready to Join Us?
If you’ve been on the fence, this is your sign.
Whether you’re RX, scaled, or joining the Sweat Open…
There is a place for you here.
Let’s show up together.
Let’s test ourselves.
Let’s have a lot of fun doing it.
