Why the CrossFit Open Is More Than a Competition (And the Real Reason CrossFit Works)

Blog, Uncategorized · March 2, 2026

Every year, when the CrossFit Open starts at CrossFit Harrisonburg, something changes.

This year it was black and yellow.

Teams formed. Costumes coordinated. Music got louder. Energy went up.

Jen, captain of Team Black, didn’t just organize her team — she brought props (including tombstones) – she turned a Friday night workout into something that felt like a championship event.CrossFit Gym Harrisonburg

Aimee, co-captain of Team Yellow and completely decked out in her team’s colors, could be heard cheering for all the athletes, even from Team Black.

People who normally slip in and out after class stayed late.

They judged. They counted reps. They cheered like it mattered.

Because it did.

But not for the reason most people think.crossfit open harrisonburg

First, Yes, The Programming Works.

CrossFit works because it’s:

Constantly varied.
Functional.
Performed at intensity.

That formula builds strength and conditioning fast.

But you can follow a program alone in your garage.

The Open proves that’s not the whole story.

The Open Reveals the Real Secret

In three short weeks, the Open magnifies what makes CrossFit different.

You see first pull-ups.
First double-unders.
Someone staring at a barbell they don’t think they can lift — and lifting it anyway.

You see a room full of adults counting someone’s final wall balls out loud.

You don’t remember your random treadmill workout.

You remember the night the entire gym was dressed in black and yellow, screaming your name.

The Open doesn’t just test fitness.

It tests belief.

And belief grows faster in a room full of people who refuse to let you quit.

Fitness Is Better With Your People

One of my favorite moments this year had nothing to do with the leader board.

Patrick brought his cousins in to try the Open.

They weren’t members (yet). They just wanted to experience it.

And they did.

And they were amazing. And the gym community was amazing – at least three people asked me their names so they could add to the cheers and encouragement!

That’s how fitness spreads.

Through proximity.
Through relationships.
Through shared struggle.

Working out with your spouse changes your marriage.

This weekend Erik and Steph did 26.1 together while Callan and Brielle taught themselves how to ride a bike.

Training with friends strengthens more than muscle.
Bringing family into the gym builds connection that goes beyond reps and rounds.

You’re far more likely to become the person you want to be when you’re surrounded by people who value growth.

The Real Reason CrossFit Works

It’s not just the methodology.

It’s the accountability.
It’s the tribe.
It’s the expectation.
It’s the Friday nights that turn into something bigger than a workout.

In a world where most adults are isolated, overstimulated, and sedentary…

The Open is a reset.

It reminds us:

You are capable of more.
You’re stronger than you think.
And you’re not meant to do hard things alone.

That’s why CrossFit works.

Not because of the leaderboard.

But because of the people.

If You’re Not Sure CrossFit Is For You…

We see it every year during the Open.

Some people love the competitive side.
Others love the energy — but aren’t sure the barbell is their thing.

That’s exactly why we’re bringing back StrongFigure Bootcamp.

Bootcamp carries the same energy you saw during the Open — the encouragement, the shared effort, the laughter, the accountability — but in a format that feels approachable and welcoming. It’s strength training built specifically for adults who want results without feeling overwhelmed. It’s especially powerful for women who know they need muscle, consistency, and community — but don’t want to feel intimidated walking into a gym.

You don’t have to start with the Open.

You just have to start somewhere.

And what makes both CrossFit and Bootcamp effective isn’t just the movements.

It’s the people.

If You’ve Been Watching From the Sidelines…

There’s something powerful about walking into a room where:

People know your name.
People push you.
People cheer for you.

You don’t need to be “in shape” to start.
You don’t need experience.
You don’t need to be competitive.

You just need to be willing to show up.

And we’ll take it from there.
