Online Fitness Rarely Works

Blog, Uncategorized · January 6, 2021

2020 hasn’t been an easy year for most of us. And it especially hasn’t been easy for us in the fitness industry.

IHRSA, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association estimated in November that the industry had already lost $15 billion dollars in lost revenue and by September, 15% of fitness facilities had permanently shut down.

And Stephanie and I haven’t exactly been immune from this crisis. So when numbers began to spike after Thanksgiving, we were really nervous. Another shutdown would be disastrous.

In an effort to protect us from such a crisis, I started really researching online fitness. And it turns out, it really wasn’t working for most people.

In one study I found, gyms that ran only Zoom classes, were only able to retain 7% of their members — 7%!

I started trying to find what gyms were doing that did work. I found one gym in Australia that actually increased their total revenue. I started looking at the specifics of what they were doing and testing it against other gyms that were doing something similar and I think I came up with the perfect solution.

It turns out that there were three keys to making online fitness work:

  • Programming that corresponded with the customer’s specific goals
  • Constantly varied workouts (online CrossFit gyms retained 47% more members than other microgyms)
  • And ACCOUNTABILITY

Accountability

As you might expect, it is difficult to motivate yourself to workout at home. We need someone to check in on us and hold us accountable.  (more)

When Stephanie and I decided to get into the fitness industry, specifically the brick-and-mortar gym industry, we set a pretty audacious goal to be the best fitness facility in the Harrisonburg area. Stephanie, especially, is really passionate about this goal. Fitness changed her life and she wants to help everyone she can. It is hard when so many are still afraid to come to the gym.

So I thought maybe we should put together a program that incorporated my research on successful online programs and offered it for those not quite ready for the gym. If that’s you, take a look at what we put together and contact us to get started. We want to help you get fit – no matter where you decide to do it!

Here are more details about that program.
