Ozempic is NOT the Devil. From Skeptic to Supporter: Rethinking GLP-1 Medications

Blog · June 30, 2025

That title might seem a bit hyperbolic. However, if you have read about Ozempic and the other GLP-1s from the plethora of fitness influencers then you will understand that it is not so far off.

And admittedly, when I first started hearing about people losing weight with Ozempic, my reaction was probably like most others: skepticism.

It seemed, at first glance, like yet another “magic pill” people were chasing instead of committing to what we know truly works — proper nutrition, exercise, and sustainable lifestyle changes. Like many of my colleagues, I viewed the rapid buzz around GLP-1 medications with suspicion. The dominant conversation in our circles was heavily focused on the negatives: side effects, risks, losing muscle, people regaining weight afterward, and the idea that these drugs were just a shortcut for those unwilling to put in the work. For months, that was essentially all I saw or heard about GLP-1s.

But over time, my perspective began to shift.

I started coming across discussions about microdosing GLP-1s and decided to dig deeper. I read studies, listened to experts, and paid attention to real-life experiences from people using these medications responsibly. And what I found was eye-opening.

How GLP-1s Work: The Science

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone naturally produced in the gut. It plays several roles:

✅ Slows stomach emptying — making people feel full longer after eating, helping reduce calorie intake.

✅ Reduces appetite — signaling satiety to the brain so people feel less hunger overall.

✅ Improves blood sugar control — stimulating insulin release when blood sugar is high and reducing excess glucose production in the liver.

✅ Supports weight loss — Studies show GLP-1 agonists like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) can produce average weight loss of 10-20% of body weight over about a year when combined with diet and lifestyle changes.

These medications were originally developed for type 2 diabetes management but have proven extremely effective for weight loss, even in people without diabetes.

Pros and Cons of GLP-1 Medications

Pros
✅ Significant Weight Loss — Clinical trials consistently show double-digit percentage weight loss in many patients. For people with obesity, this can dramatically improve health outcomes.

✅ Better Metabolic Health — Benefits extend beyond weight, including improved blood sugar, lower cholesterol, reduced inflammation, and decreased risk of cardiovascular disease.

✅ Appetite Regulation — For many, GLP-1s provide relief from relentless cravings or binge urges, making it easier to adhere to healthy eating plans.

✅ Potential Longevity Benefits — There’s early research suggesting GLP-1s might reduce risks for some chronic diseases associated with obesity and metabolic dysfunction.

Cons
⚠️ Side Effects — Nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and sometimes more serious effects like gallbladder issues or pancreatitis in rare cases.

⚠️ Cost & Insurance Coverage — These medications can be very expensive without insurance or if used for weight loss rather than diabetes.

⚠️ Possible Muscle Loss — Rapid weight loss can include lean body mass unless people prioritize protein intake and resistance training.

⚠️ Not a Standalone Solution — They won’t magically change habits. People still need guidance on nutrition, exercise, and sustainable lifestyle changes to maintain results long-term.

⚠️ Potential Weight Regain — Stopping the medication often leads to regaining lost weight if lifestyle habits haven’t been addressed.

A New Perspective

I now firmly believe that health and fitness professionals — gym owners, coaches, nutritionists, and trainers — need to embrace this reality. Instead of dismissing GLP-1 users or viewing them as “taking the easy way out,” we should see them as people who are taking an important step toward better health.

These individuals often still need guidance, support, and education to make lasting changes. For example:

  • Helping them build resistance training programs to preserve muscle during weight loss.

  • Teaching sustainable eating patterns so they’re not reliant on medication alone. And they understand the role of protein in preserving muscle while on these medications.

  • Offering community and accountability to prevent weight regain.

By reaching out and supporting clients who are using GLP-1 medications, we can help them maximize the benefits, avoid pitfalls, and achieve the health and lives they deserve. The future of health and fitness isn’t about either medication or lifestyle — it’s about how we integrate the best tools available into holistic, sustainable wellness plans.

It took me some time to come around, but I’m glad I did. GLP-1s like Ozempic, when used correctly and with the right support, have the potential to change lives. As an industry, we shouldn’t ignore that — we should be part of helping people succeed with them.
