Why Competing in a CrossFit Event Might Be Exactly What You Need — VDM 2026 is Coming to Virginia!

Blog, Uncategorized · December 2, 2025

If you’ve spent any time inside CrossFit Harrisonburg, you’ve felt it: the energy of people pushing themselves, cheering each other on, and discovering they’re capable of more than they realized. That spirit is what makes CrossFit special—and one of the best ways to experience it at the highest level is by stepping onto the competition floor.

Now, competing isn’t for everyone. You don’t need to compete to get fitter, healthier, or stronger. But for many athletes, signing up for a competition becomes a powerful catalyst—one that builds confidence, camaraderie, and a sense of purpose in training that’s hard to replicate.

And if you’ve ever been curious about experiencing that for yourself… the 2026 Valentines Day Massacre (VDM) Competition is your perfect opportunity.

What Makes Competitions So Beneficial?

1. You Push Yourself in a Whole New Way

Training in class is awesome—but competition hits differently. Workouts feel sharper. Focus gets tighter. You discover gears you didn’t know you had. Even athletes who don’t consider themselves “competitive” often surprise themselves with what they can do under a clock and alongside a partner.

2. You Learn to Perform Under Pressure

Testing your fitness in a controlled, supportive environment builds resilience that carries back into the gym—and into life. You learn to stay calm, trust your training, and keep moving even when things get uncomfortable.

3. You Bond With Your Community

There’s nothing like the camaraderie of competition day. Teammates, judges, coaches, and fellow athletes all cheering each other on—it’s something every CrossFitter should experience at least once. And VDM, with its teams-of-two format, makes it even more fun. You don’t go in alone. You go in with someone who’s got your back.

4. You Get a Clear Snapshot of Your Fitness

Competitions reveal strengths, highlight weaknesses, and give you direction for your training. You leave inspired and motivated, no matter the leaderboard.

5. It’s Fun. Actually, Really Fun.

The adrenaline. The music. The community. The high-fives. The food afterwards. The memories. Competitions bring out the best parts of CrossFit in one concentrated day. Seriously, some of my all time favorite CrossFit memories are cheering on our athletes, hanging out between workouts, and watching our members reach new and amazing feats!
