Why Harrisonburg Is a Great Place to Live, Work, and Train

Blog · January 19, 2026

I moved to Harrisonburg from Northern Virginia in 1996 to attend James Madison University. Like many people, I always assumed I would finish school and move back to NOVA. That was the plan — until Harrisonburg changed it.

Over time, the Shenandoah Valley and the city itself won out. The pace of life, the access to the outdoors, and the strength of the community made it hard to leave. Years later, Harrisonburg still feels like home.

Sure, I miss fishing for largemouth bass. But beyond that, Harrisonburg wins in almost every area. Smallmouth are almost as fun, and the outdoor opportunities here are outstanding. The hiking options are far superior, with incredible trails and rock scrambling just minutes away. There’s great canoeing, solid river access, and even some kayaking — though Northern Virginia may have the edge for dedicated kayakers.

What truly sets Harrisonburg apart, however, is the people. The community here is welcoming, supportive, and invested in one another. That spirit shows up clearly at CrossFit Harrisonburg. CFH isn’t just a place to work out — it’s a community that reflects what the Valley is all about: encouragement, accountability, and people genuinely wanting to see each other succeed. That kind of environment exists in larger areas too, but it’s harder to find and easier to lose.

Harrisonburg offers a rare balance — meaningful work, access to health and fitness, outdoor adventure, and a strong sense of belonging. It’s a place where training fits into life rather than competing with it.

For those considering a move or simply wanting to better understand what living here is like, ForeverHarrisonburg offers a practical local guide that covers key things to know before deciding. You can read it here:
